How To Backup Your iPhone, iPod or iPad
Backup Your iPhone, iPod or iPad
Before you upgrade your device it's always a good idea to back up all of your data. This is especially important when you haven't synced your device in a while. While the chances of a error occurring and forcing you to go full restore are slim, it's always a good idea to backup your stuff.

Plug your device into iTunes, right click on your device in the left panel. Select Back Up from the drop down menu. It might take a while, but it's worth it if things going horribly wrong.

I have one 3G iPhone called 1, that is jailbroken and unlocked and restored using customiPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Custom_Restore.ipsw
I have a second 3G iPhone that is running 3.1.3. I have purchased apps etc. on the second phone. I want to sync/back-up the second phone to iTunes, but want to keep items downloaded directly to the #2 phone, which is also jailbroken and unlocked, but I want to restore it using the custom ipsw to upgrade it to 4.2.1. from the #1 phone.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I have backed up the #1 phone, but have not backed up the #2 phone yet. Can I back-up the #2 phone and somehow retain items purchased directly to that phone, but restore #2 phone using the back-up from the #1 phone?
Any help would be appreciated, I have not had the best luck when syncing in the past.
Many Thanks,
