Casey's Contraptions Review
In a title that may challenge the best-selling Angry Birds and Cut the Rope for the top puzzle game slot on the App Store comes the recently released Casey's Contraptions, an iPad game in which you must invent new ways for Casey to put his toys away via 30-plus household items that can be arranged and tested to solve the puzzle. This delightful, Rube-Goldberg title proves that sometimes they get an iOS app just about perfect on the first try.

Try to build the most direct pipe you can without interfering with other parts of the puzzle.
But the game's 70 levels across three environments won't be easy for you to nail on the first try -- you'll have to approach each puzzle with a trial-and-error method. Apple's Game Center lets you save your high scores as well as store and share your solutions to assorted puzzles, and the game also boasts a level editor to create your own levels. Plus, Casey's good graphics, responsive controls, steady frame rate, fun music, and a realistic physics engine make for a puzzle title that's interesting to work through.
While Casey's Contraptions is for all intents and purposes a puzzle game, the developers know when and how to reward you for your efforts. Yes, this is the kind of game that could drive you crazy with each level, but it offers enough hints, achievements, and unlocks to keep you moving forward. For moments where you're entirely frustrated with the whole process, it's easy enough to switch to another environment and begin working on a different series of puzzles.

Unlocked items are sure to come in handy later.
Perhaps the best thing about Casey's Contraptions is that it doesn't define itself as a game specifically for children, teens, or adults. Yes, this is a good title for parents and kids can hook into it, but it retains its own sense of style without feeling like a generic edutainment title or clone of another puzzle game.
While the title isn't perfect (it can be a bit tricky to select and rotate an individual item and it'd be helpful to be able to simultaneously select and rotate multiple items), Casey's Contraptions got everything else right. This isn't an overly-gooey children's title where a saccharine theme overrides any fun you or your kids might have, nor is it so challenging that you'll become frustrated with it and walk away from it.

Use the balloon's upward motion to activate other parts of your contraption.
The bottom line. In the end, the final product turns out to be something you can relax, work on for 10-15 minutes, solve a few puzzles, unlock some new items, and go on with the rest of your day.
iPad running iOS 4.1 or later.
Great physics engine. 70 levels. Game Center support. Tricky without being frustrating. Level editor lets you get creative.
Can only select and rotate one item at a time. iPad only; we wish it were universal.
