Pulse: Volume One Review

When you hit a note just right, it explodes into a burst of colorful, whimsical objects.
This music game for iPad hits the sweet spot between difficult and soothing. As the pulse extends out, you tap the circles, which match up to the music and scramble all over the screen. It's so basic they don't even bother explaining it to you. But it's also exhilarating and lovely, and addictive in a way we can't quite explain either.
The music is a big part of the appeal. Many rhythm games go for "untz untz" dance tracks or Top 40 pop, but Pulse's eight-song instrumental soundtrack (with more promised in updates) is much more diverse, including a waltz, a contemplative ballad, a disco-y number, and…we don't want to spoil it.
The bottom line. This is a must play. Volume One is No. 1 with a bullet.
iPad running iOS 4.2 or later
Eight songs included, more promised by the developers. Simple gameplay, but it's appropriately difficult to get a perfect score.
No help or instructions, but that doesn't matter much because you'll catch on so quickly.
