The hot news is of course Apple's confirmation that something's going down this Wednesday. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the schedule and the image and now all that's left is wrangling over specs. Will there be surprises? We sure hope so. Meanwhile, here's a few other stories that were burning up the wires this week.
Well, that quiet little sneak, Mountain Lion certainly got people riled up once it showed itself out in the open. It comes in on its quiet cat feet, then suddenly it's on you. Well, we're not complaining. We kinda like turning down the volume once in a while, so we can focus on the heat. And do we have a week's worth of hot for y'all. Of course, with cats.
Three years ago, Apple bowed out of the Macworld Expo, leaving the convention halls barren and fans wondering about the future of the show. Though it took awhile to get its new bearings, the convention has since picked up a bit. The Macworld Expo has transformed into a showroom for upcoming products from third-party manufacturers that consumers didn't get the see at CES, a forum for App developers to get a feel for what consumers really want to do with their iOS devices, and a place where fans can connect to show off how simple it is to get creative with the Mac. Watch the video to see what show-goers thought about this year's Macworld/iWorld Expo, and whether or not they think the new name will actually stick.
We loved the Olloclip. It's one of the few iPhone lenses out there that doesn't require a case to use and gives iOS photographers three different perspectives to choose from, including wide angle, macro, and fish eye. It's truly a versatile product, so we asked one of the founders why they decided to put three lenses into one.
I took a leisurely stroll through the show floor yesterday afternoon. Fueled only be half a veggie burger and two 16oz glasses of Sprite, I saw some things that I will never forget. And here they are, documented in this video to show you, fair Mac|Life reader. Enjoy.
PS) For the record, those Western Digital hard drives were not running hot. I was trying to make a bad pun, but it didn't work out. And as you may know, I am often spouting bad puns.
The Glif+ from Studio Neat is a deluxe trifecta of contraptions that keep your iPhone securely mounted to a tripod. You can use the kit with a Joby Gorilla Pod or a regular tripod meant for your DSLR, or you can turn the Glif+ into its own little tripod.
Our videographer (see also: visonary) Michael DeLano took a GoPro through the convention halls and shortened it down to two minutes to give you a fully immersive walkthrough of the Macworld/iWorld show floor. Check out and be sure to pay attention to the slow downs--you might see some people you know.
It's our favorite time of year at Mac|Life HQ. Not only does Flo do her best to fatten us all up with her baking experiments (Team Pie!), but we also get to take a short break from doing things like benchmarking hardware and testing accounting software to play with toys. And really, who doesn't like toys? And this time around, we've got things that shoot*, and things that fly. Both make for very happy holidays around the office.
And speaking of happy holidays, you can enter for a chance to win the Griffin HELO TC iPhone-controlled helicopter shown in the video right here.
It's easy! All you have to do is pop off the bottom part and drop in the solid-state drive! Watch the video to find out how.
Note: in the video, I forgot to mention that you have to take out the screws on the sides of the stock hard drive contained in your MacBook and transfer them to the SSD. More details available here.
